UAH COLLEGE OF NURSING PREPARES STUDENTS FOR NCLEX | 11:40 Am |
NCLEX is a required exam for all nursing graduates before they can be issued a license. All states require this exam to be taken once students have obtained a degree in nursing. UAH College of Nursing has included preparation for this exam in their curriculum. This is a capstone course offered in the senior year for all Nursing students. An exam is given at the end of the semester modeled after the NCLEX. This is the final exam and it is designed to help the students prepare for the state exam prior to graduation. "It is a good predictor of the student's preparedness for the exam," said Dr. Fay Raines, Dean of College of Nursing. "We want our students to be prepared so they will pass the exam." Students must obtain their degree before they can apply to take the state exam. Once they apply they will be given a date and location for them to take the computerized exam. They apply to the National Council of State Boards of Nurses. "Everyone is required to take the NCLEX in the state in which you are applying for your license. In order to be issued a license to practice nursing you have to pass the NCLEX and it is required in every state," said Rhonda Fletcher, RN from Huntsville Hospital. Students are showing concern about the requirements of UAH. Tuition is being used to take an exam and it is a replica of the NCLEX. There are a number of opportunities out there to prepare students for this exam that are extremely expensive but UAH provides it to the students as part of their credit hours. It will give UAH nursing faculty and the students the confidence they are prepared for the exam. "I feel that it would benefit students to take the class to prepare for the NCLEX. By taking the class I feel I will gain confidence and knowledge prior to taking the exam," said Corey Mayfield, a junior in the College of Nursing. Raines said, "We made it part of our curriculum in order to complete our goal of educating students to be successful in their career by making them successful in passing this exam." Statistics on the volume and pass rates are located on the web site for the NCLEX for RN. For 2003 the total overall pass rate was 71%. As of January 1, 2004 graduates can re-take the exam after 45 days if they did not pass. The test costs $200 and is a requirement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. These are agencies that are in charge of setting the guidelines for licensure and practice. The NCLEX structure is the framework of client needs, which provides a universal structure for defining nursing actions and competencies. The client needs are broken into sub categories. These categories are Safe, Effective Care Environment, Health, Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity and Physiological Integrity.
